Stomach cancer, also known as gastric cancer, can be difficult to detect in its early stages because symptoms often overlap with other common gastrointestinal issues. However, recognizing the early signs can lead to earlier diagnosis and better treatment outcomes. Here are some early signs of stomach cancer to watch for.

Persistent Indigestion

One of the early signs of stomach cancer is persistent indigestion or heartburn. If you experience frequent discomfort, burning sensations, or pain in your stomach that doesn’t go away with over-the-counter treatments, it’s important to see a doctor.

Unexplained Weight Loss

Losing weight without trying is another warning sign. If you notice a significant drop in your weight without changes to your diet or exercise routine, it could be a sign of an underlying health issue, including stomach cancer.

Feeling Full Quickly

Early satiety, or feeling full after eating only a small amount of food, can be an early symptom of stomach cancer. This can happen because a tumor in the stomach takes up space, making it difficult to eat a normal portion of food.

Nausea and Vomiting

Experiencing frequent nausea and vomiting, especially if it’s persistent and doesn’t seem to be linked to other causes like food poisoning or the flu, can be a sign of stomach cancer. In some cases, vomiting might include blood, which requires immediate medical attention.

Abdominal Pain or Discomfort

Chronic pain or discomfort in the abdomen, especially above the navel, can be an early indicator. This pain may be mild at first but can become more constant and severe over time.

Loss of Appetite

A sudden loss of appetite or a lack of interest in eating can be an early symptom. If you notice that you’re no longer hungry or are eating much less than usual, it’s worth discussing with a healthcare provider.

Blood in Stool

Blood in your stool, which may appear dark or black, can be a sign of bleeding in the stomach. This symptom should always be evaluated by a doctor as it can indicate a serious condition.

Fatigue and Weakness

Chronic fatigue and general weakness can occur if stomach cancer causes anemia, which happens when the cancer leads to bleeding in the stomach. Feeling unusually tired and weak, even with adequate rest, should prompt a medical check-up.

When to See a Doctor

If you experience any of these symptoms persistently, it’s important to consult a healthcare provider. While these symptoms can be caused by many different conditions, it’s crucial to rule out serious issues like stomach cancer.
